Background

Cardinal Rugambwa Memorial College (CARUMCO) is a new institution established in 2019 recognized by National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) with registration number REG/BTP/108. The college is owned by Bukoba Catholic Diocese having honored a name of the first Black African Cardinal and the Bishop of Bukoba His Eminence Late Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa who had a great vision of uplifting the black man from misery through Education. The college takes the place of Cardinal Rugambwa Memorial University College (CARUMUCO) which was a constituent college of the St. Augustine University of Tanzania.

The College is located at Manumbu area, Nkindo village about 8 kilometres from Bukoba town.

Card. Rugambwa.

Laurean Cardinal Rugambwa was the first African in the history of the Catholic Church to be the first African Catholic Bishop to be created Cardinal (03 March 1960). His achievement as bishop of Rutabo (1952 – 1960), Bukoba (1960 – 1969) and as Archbishop of Dar es Salaam (1969-1993) makes him a tale of two cities, Buhaya and Dar es Salaam.

His contribution to human development in spheres of evangelization and education is witnessed by the Parishes, Schools, Convents, Hospitals, Pastoral centers and Seminaries he erected.
Given the nascent history of the person, the primal selection as the first African Cardinal, his vision and contribution to human sustainable development, his name finds a right spot to bear this College.

One of the justifications for having this  College in Bukoba is the high demand for higher education in Tanzania today. Secondly, despite the high demand for higher education, most institutions for higher education are located in cities and municipalities which leaves most rural areas and small towns like Bukoba not catered for in terms of the direct and indirect benefits of hosting a higher education institution in the locality.

With the foregoing reasons in mind, Bukoba Diocese decided to bring technical education services to Bukoba in order to help, through training and research, alleviate educational and professional problems in Kagera Region.

Additionally, this is in line with the national development vision 2025 which mainly focuses on high quality life, peace, stability and unity, good governance, a well-educated society and a competitive economy capable of producing sustainable growth and shared benefits. All these cannot be achieved without the expansion and the provision of high quality technical education.
